Lady Cards fall in first round

Nov. 3, 2011

NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Lamar University women's soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 1-0 loss to Sam Houston State in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament on Thursday.

Sam Houston State (9-11-1), the No. 6 seed, struck quickly in the second half for the game's only goal. Emily Edenstrom took a pass from Kirby Zak on the kickoff and beat Lamar goalkeeper Jennifer Gibbs just 13 seconds after intermission.

After that, Sam Houston played solid defense, holding the Lady Cardinals (9--8-2), the No. 3 seed, to just two shots on goal in the second half.

Gibbs made five saves for Lamar, while Michele McCullough made three saves for the shutout.

Despite the loss, Lamar concluded its best season in the five-year history of the program, setting records for wins (9) and conference wins (6).

Sam Houston state advanced to meet second-seeded Texas State in Friday's semifinals at 4:30 p.m.
