HOUSTON - Monique Whittaker registered her first career double-double to lead the Lamar University women's basketball team to a 69-56 victory over UMKC at the Husky Classic at Houston Baptist University on Saturday.
Whittaker had 19 points and a career-high 10 rebounds for the Lady Cardinals, who ran their winning streak to five games. Kalis Loyd had 18 points and matched a career best with six steals for Lamar, while Jenna Plumley added 17 points. Plumley was 6-of-6 from the foul line as she extended he streak of consecutive free throws made to 20. Plumley is 26-of-27 (96.3 percent) for free throws on the season.
Lamar trailed by 11 points, 43-32, with 14:12 to play, but went on a 21-2 run over the next eight minutes to take a 53-45 lead with 6:28 remaining. Lamar would lead by as much as 21 points late in the game as it cruised to victory.
"We had a lot of people step up," Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. "We had to turn it up. We were a little bit lethargic for a while."
Peyton Adamson led UMKC (3-3) with 14 points, while Ashli Hill had 13 points and nine rebounds.
"We played a very good, very well-coached team," Tidwell said. "We definitely had to work for the win"
