BEAUMONT, Texas - Seven individual and eight team records fell during Lamar University's 2010 football season, one that produced a 5-6 record in the first year for the Cardinals to play football since 1989.

Andre Bevil led the individual assault, setting three records and tying another. The junior quarterback's set his first two records came in spectacular fashion in the Cardinals' season opener at McNeese State when he passed for 429 yards and accumulated 426 yards of total offense.

A 6-foot-1, 180-pounder from West Orange-Stark, Bevil shattered another record two weeks later when he completed 34 passes in a stunning 29-28 upset of Southeastern Louisiana.

Both Octavious Logan and Marcus Jackson used their special teams shills to etch their names in the school record book. Logan, a 5-6, 170-pound junior from Starkville, Miss., set a new standard with 661 kickoff return yards, and his total of 28 returns tied the mark set by Dwayne Barnes in 1986.

Jackson also matched a mark with his 90-yard punt return for a touchdown in the Cardinals' season-ending 44-6 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State.

The Cardinals' other individual record also came in the finale as freshman Justin Stout kicked three field goals to match the previous record shared by Frank Van Renselaer, Mike Marlow and Jabo Leonard.

Among the team records set by coach Ray Woodard's Cardinals were 429 passing yards in their season-opening, 30-27 loss to McNeese State and 34 pass completions against Southeastern Louisiana.

Bevil, who became only the fourth Cardinal quarterback to throw for more than 2,000 yards in a season, led the team in passing by completing 157 of 288 attempts for 2,013 yards and 14 touchdowns. : Logan took the team rushing title by a scant yard (229-228) over senior Kwabena Asante, and sophomore Cody Hussey of Lumberton was a close third with 217 yards.

Junior J.J. Hayes of Diboll was the team's leading receiver with 52 catches for 745 yards and six touchdowns. Jackson, a junior from Tyler Lee, was second with 41 receptions for 727 yards and eight TDs, and he was first in scoring with 54 points.

Stout had a good season, making nine of his 13 field goal attempts and connecting on 20 of 22 conversions. Freshman Kollin Kahler was the top punter with a 38.0-yard average on 55 punts.

Linebacker Asim Hicks, a junior from Newark, N.J., led the defense with 102 tackles, including 77 of the unassisted variety. Fellow linebacker Jonathan Ekpe, a junior from Cape Vincent, N.Y., was second with 75 tackles, including 58 solos.

Defensive backs Tim Hayter, a junior from Tyler Lee, and Branden Thomas, a freshman from Beaumont Central, shared the team interception lead with three each. Thomas also had team bests of three blocked kicks and nine pass breakups.

Jacody Coleman, a junior defensive end from Beaumont West Brook, was the only Cardinal to recover two fumbles.
