CORPUS CHRISTI - Redshirt sophomore Tina Hobbs continued her strong play on Saturday, but it was not enough as Lamar University saw its three-match Southland Conference volleyball winning streak come to an end with a 3-2 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The loss dropped the Lady Cardinals to 8-9 on the season and 4-2 in SLC action. The Islanders, which beat Lamar for just the second time ever, improved to 8-11 on the year and 2-4 in the conference.
The two teams split the first four sets, with Lamar winning set one by a 25-22 score and the fourth set by a 25-16 mark. The Islanders won the middle two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-14.
TAMUCC jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the deciding fifth set and looked as though it would win easily. LU battled back, tying the game at 7-7 and taking the lead on a Wendy Krell kill at 9-8.
Hobbs pounded out one of her 12 kills to give Lamar a 13-12 lead, but the Islanders would rally. With the score tied at 14, TAMUCC scored the next two points to win the match with a 16-14 set five victory.
Hobbs' 12 kills led the Lady Cardinals' offense, with Krell, Jayme Bazile and Megan McStravick each chipping in with nine kills.
Emma Ridley tallied a match-high 18 kills to lead the Islanders' attack.
Lamar will return to action on Thursday night when conference leader Central Arkansas pays a visit to McDonald Gym for a 7 p.m. match.
