Box Score

BEAUMONT - Lamar University rebounded from a tough home loss to Central Arkansas on Thursday to roll over rival Northwestern State by a 3-0 score Saturday at McDonald Gym in Southland Conference volleyball action.

The Lady Cardinals put a halt to their short two-match losing streak to improve to 9-10 on the year and 5-3 in the SLC. NSU fell to 10-11 on the year and 2-7 in conference play.

"This was a great opportunity to rebuild some confidence after a couple of tough losses," said LU head coach Justin Gibert. "It's good to get back to winning and reestablish ourselves offensively. Hopefully we can build on this and string together a few wins in a row."

After winning a back-and-forth first set by a 25-21 score, Lamar left little doubt from that point on. LU limited NSU to a .000 attack percentage for the match and won the final two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-19.

Sophomore middle blocker Tina Hobbs had a highly efficient match for the Lamar offense. Hobbs pounded out a match-high 11 kills, hitting .500 and picking up four blocks.

Freshman Megan McStravick continues to shine at outside hitter for Lamar, finishing with seven kills and a .353 attack percentage. Bailey Smith added a match-high 13 digs for Lamar.

The Lady Cardinals, who will play at McNeese State on Tuesday night at 7, trail only Central Arkansas in the SLC East Division with half of the conference season still to play.

"We are certainly a little disappointed that we dropped a couple of matches we shouldn't have," said Gibert. "At this point, though, we have to focus on the matches ahead and try and pick up as many wins as possible to build momentum going into the SLC Tournament."

NSU got seven kills apiece from Brittany Fruge and Taylor Deering, while Sarah Gillis finished with 10 digs.
