ALBANY, N.Y. -- Lamar had a dominating offensive performance Saturday morning but wasn't able to maintain that play in the championship match of the UAlbany Volleyball Classic at University Gymnasium Saturday night, falling to the host Great Danes 3-1.
Lamar (2-4) finished the tournament with a 2-1 record after the 22-25, 25-23, 19-25, 23-25 setback.
Freshman Jayme Bazile led Lamar with a team-high 16 kills on .545 hitting to go along with her match-high six block assists. Kaci Brewer had 15 kills and 15 digs. Adrianne Meengs had 48 assists, nine digs and four block assists.
Both Brewer and Meengs were named to the all-tournament team. Brewer had 32 kills, 38 digs, four aces and five block assists in Lamar's three matches, while Meengs 107 assists, 21 kills and 26 digs.
LU led 9-8 in the first set but saw Albany score five-straight points for a 13-9 lead. The Lady Cardinals fought back and made it a 22-21 ball game but Albany scored three of the final four points for the win.
Lamar won the second stanza thanks in large part to a 5-0 run early in the set that gave LU a 7-3 cushion. The Danes tied it at 11 before the Lady Cards went on a 6-1 run for a 17-12 lead and eventually taking the set 25-23.
The third set featured eight ties and two lead changes with the final change coming on an Albany 5-0 stretch to break a 9-9 tie.
In the final set, Lamar led 9-5 after three Bailey Smith service aces were part of a 6-0 run. But Albany came back and eventually won the match with a 25-23 score. Neither team led by more than three over the final 34 points of the deciding set.
Lamar will return to action next weekend at the Husky Classic, hosted by Houston Baptist. LU will face Penn and HBU on Friday, Sept. 11, before closing the event against Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday, Sept. 12.
