HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- The Lamar volleyball team closed out the non-conference portion of its regular-season schedule with a split against North Texas and Central Michigan at the Bearkat Classic Saturday.
Following Friday's conference-opening loss to Sam Houston State, the Lady Cards were back at Johnson Coliseum for a 9 a.m. match against CMU. The Chippewas came away with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 29-27) win as they .336 and had three players posted double-digit kills.
Lauren Holdorff led Lamar with 11 kills as Kaci Brewer and Wendy Krell added nine each.
LU led 23-21 in set one before CMU scored the final four points. The Lady Cards held an 11-9 lead in the second set before yielding six-consecutive points that eventually led to falling behind for good at 17-16. In the final set LU had two set points but was unable to capitalize as the extra points contest went the way of the Chippewas.
Lamar bounced back five hours later as it swept UNT with a 27-25, 25-19, 25-23 score, which included a season-high nine service aces, including three each from Cynthia McCollum and Bailey Smith.
The Cards fought off two set points in the first set and got two blocks in the final four points en route to the win. LU used runs of 4-0 and 5-0 to turn a 9-8 deficit into an 18-13 advantage en route to the second set victory. The final set was a tight contest throughout but with the score tied at 23, the Lady Cardinals closed out the match on a McCollum ace and their final block of the day.
Holdorff was named to the all-tournament team after she combined for 26 kills, 12 digs and four block assists.
Lamar (5-7, 0-1 SLC) will come home for its first match in Beaumont next Saturday when Sam Houston State pays a visit to McDonald Gym. First serve is set for 3 p.m. and live stats will be available at LamarCardinals.com.
