HOUSTON -- Lamar hit a season-high in a 3-0 win over Penn before fighting off Houston Baptist 3-1 on the first day of the Husky Classic at Sharp Gym Friday.
Lamar hit .299 against Penn in a 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 win that saw Lauren Holdorff tally a season-high 16 kills to accompany four block assists. Adrianne Meengs finished with 29 assists, 13 digs and eight kills, while Cynthia McCollum had her first double-figure kill match of the year with 11.
The Lady Cardinals held Penn to .179 hitting and a total of 21 attack errors.
In the nightcap against the Huskies, LU fell behind 1-0 before regrouping for a 24-26, 25-19, 25-11, 25-17 win. After HBU hit .235 i the first set, they did not eclipse the .150 mark the remainder of the match, combing for a .037 pct.
Lamar, meanwhile, played big at the net with 11 blocks. This after an eight block match against Penn. Jayme Bazile, the reigning Southland Defensive Player of the Week, had seven blocks in each match, including three solos against HBU.
Wendy Krell had 11 kills as Holdorff recorded seven kills, four aces and two block assists. Meengs added 31 assists and eight kills. She hit over .500 in both matches to extend that streak to three-straight.
Lamar is now 4-4 on the season and will conclude the tournament against Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday at 3 p.m.
