FULLERTON, Calif. -- The Lamar volleyball team won the first set against Cal State Fullerton but wasn't able to maintain the momentum and lost the next three for a 3-1 setback in the opening match of the season at Titan Gym late Friday night.
Senior setter Adrianne Meengs led the offense with 13 kills, 27 assists and seven digs, while hitting a match-high .600. Freshman middle blocker Jayme Bazile had nine kills and a team-best four blocks in her Lamar debut. Seniors Kaci Brewer and Lauren Holdorff also had eight kills apiece.
Lamar hit .419 in the opening set, using a 3-0 spurt to break an 18-18 tie en route to a 25-22 score. The Lady Cardinals got four kills from Brewer and Holdorff in the set.
The Titans used a 9-3 run in the second set to distance themselves following a 5-5 deadlock to win 25-22. Erin Saddler, who finished with a match-high 24 kills and 16 digs, had seven kills in the set for the home team.
Fullerton won the third set 25-22 and maintained at least a two-point cushion over the final 14 points following a Holdorff service ace that cut the Titan lead to 17-16.
Lamar led 7-5 in the fourth set before Fullerton took an 11-9 lead on a 7-4 run. The Titans pulled away for a 25-20 win.
Fullerton outhit Lamar .268-.225 and held a strong edge in digs, 65-47.
Lamar will return to action on Saturday when it faces Idaho and Appalachian State in its final two matches of the Titan Classic.
