BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's basketball team saw their 15-game home winning streak snapped on Saturday, falling to the UTSA Roadrunners 77-45 at the Montagne Center.
The loss drops the Lady Cardinals to 18-9 overall and 9-5 in Southland Conference play. Texas San Antonio improves to 19-8 overall and 12-2 in SLC play with the win.
The Roadrunners opened up an early lead in the first half and were able to maintain their advantage behind a strong shooting performance. UTSA finished the opening 20 minutes with a 56.3 shooting performance while LU shot 37.9 percent and trailed at the break 44-24.
In the second half the Lady Cardinals picked up their defensive intensity and held UTSA to 37.9 percent shooting, but could not overcome their own shooting woes, and made just 23.1 percent of their attempts from the field.
Nikki Williams led the Lady Cards with 11 points and Trashanna Smith had a game-high 16 rebounds to lead the LU effort on the glass.
The LU women will be back in action on Wednesday night when they close out the 2009 home schedule against Texas A&M Corpus Christi a 7:00.
