Lady Cards roll over Rams

Dec. 2, 2009

BEAUMONT, Texas - Wednesday was a record-setting day for the Lamar University women's basketball team in a 111-52 victory over visiting Huston-Tillotson at the Montagne Center.

Trashanna Smith set a school mark with nine blocked shots as the Lady Cardinals (6-2) rolled to their largest victory of the season in front of a kids day crowd of 1,628. Jenna Plumley handed out 14 assists, just one shy of the school record.

Lamar had seven players score in double figures, led by freshman Jasmin Henderson's career-high 23 points. Ang Green netted a career-high 21 points, Kalis Loyd had 18 points, Plumley had 12 points and six steals, Smith had 12 points and 15 rebounds, Darika Hill had 11 points and Ashley Crawford finished with 10 points.

Lamar shot 53.5 percent (46-of-86) for the game, connecting on 59 percent (23-of-39) of its shots in the second half. Henderson was especially deadly, going 9-of-10 from the floor, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range.

"We shot the ball really well today," Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. "We ran the offense well and got good shots."

Huston-Tillotson (2-6) was led by Ashley Bell's double-double of 24 points and 12 rebounds. Brittney Jones had 10 points for the Rams, while Kandice Smith pulled down 10 rebounds.

Smith's nine blocks topped the record of eight set by Carla Hough against Arkansas on Jan. 29, 1986, and equaled by Brigette Birdwell against Stephen F. Austin on Dec. 30, 1997.

Lamar returns to action at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5 when it travels to Louisiana-Monroe for a non-conference game to open a three-game road swing. The next home contest is set for 2:05 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20 vs. Rice.
