SAN MARCOS, Texas - The defending Southland Conference champions proved to be too much for the third-year Lamar women's soccer team as the Lady Cardinals fell 2-0 at the Bobcat Soccer Complex Friday night.
Texas State (8-5, 3-0 SLC) struck first in the 23rd minute when leading scorer Britney Curry benefited from defensive miscue by the Lady Cards when attempting to clear a long ball out of their end of the field. After a header by LU's Rachelle Barry, Curry gained possession of the ball, got behind the Lamar back line and beat goalkeeper Jennifer Gibbs inside the right post for her 11th score of the year.
"We were unable to clear it after Rachelle's header and (Curry) made a nice play to get the one-v-one with Jen and slip it past her," said Lamar head coach Dewi Hardman, whose team fell to 1-10-1 overall and 0-3 in league play.
That was how things stood for the remainder of the half as the Bobcats held a 5-0 shot advantage. They also managed to generate a 5-1 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Just over 20 minutes into the second period the Bobcats struck again as Taylor Person took a cross from Jaimie Leake off the left side and scored from 12 yards out. That made it 2-0 TSU at the 68:36 mark.
Lamar finished with one shot on goal as Lexi Gebhardt's attempt in the 85th minute was stopped by Mandi Mawyer to preserve the shutout.
"We are not creating enough chances at the moment," Hardman said. "We are fighting very hard but tonight we played one of the better teams in the conference on the road and they showed their strength.
"I was proud of the way we came out and played in the second half."
Lamar will conclude its weekend road trip on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they take on UTSA at the UTSA Recreational Complex in San Antonio.
