SAN ANTONIO - The Lamar volleyball team dropped the final three sets in a 3-2 loss to UTSA and saw its season-best four-match win streak come to an end at the Convocation Center Thursday night.
Lamar moved to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in Southland Conference play as UTSA improved to 7-11 and 2-2. The Lady Cardinals also remained winless in two five-setters this season. LU never trailed in taking the first two sets 25-17 and 25-16 before UTSA mounted a comeback that resulted in its first win of the season after falling behind 2-0.
The Roadrunners claimed the win on set scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 15-10 as they hit .179 and held an 82-66 edge in digs. As a result, the Lady Cardinals hit just .161 and committed an uncharacteristic 13 service errors. LU did collect ten service aces with four from Kaci Brewer.
"We just didn't give the effort we needed to in order to come away with the win," LU head coach Justin Gibert said.
Freshman Jayme Bazile led Lamar with 13 kills while posting five block assists. Lauren Holdorff notched 12 kills and also had contributed to five of Lamar's 10 team blocks.
Lamar led for much of the early part of the third set before a kill by UTSA's Amber Brooks gave the home team the lead for good at 13-12.
The Lady Cards never led in the fourth set and saw a 5-5 tie swing the way of the Roadrunners with a 7-0 run. LU responded with a 12-6 run that was capped off by a Wendy Krell ace to make the score 18-17 UTSA. But after a Runner timeout, UTSA picked up seven of the final nine points to force the deciding set.
UTSA grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in the fifth set before LU responded with three points of its own to tie the score. Four UTSA points later gave them all the cushion they would need in defeating Lamar in San Antonio for the second-consecutive season.
The Roadrunners were led by Kendra Rowland's double-double of 12 kills and 15 digs. Briana Mason added a match-high 15 kills.
Lamar will look to rebound from its second road loss of the SLC season when it travels to Corpus Christi to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon.
