Lamar Sweeps Texas State

Oct. 3, 2009

Box Score

Lamar used a 7-0 run late in the third set to complete a 3-0 sweep of Texas State at McDonald Gym Saturday afternoon.

Lamar found itself ahead 2-0 in sets but trailing 18-15 in the third when Kaci Brewer served up seven-consecutive points to put the Lady Cardinals ahead 21-18. Lauren Holdorff had two of her match-high 10 kills during the run. LU had already used a 5-0 run earlier in the set to chip away at a 16-7 deficit.

"We withstood that rally of theirs in the third set and I though we won the serving and passing game," LU head coach Justin Gibert said. "And that really was the difference in the match."

Lamar (8-7, 3-1 SLC) had eight service aces compared to just one for Texas State. The Bobcats also committed 12 service errors in the match.

Kaci Brewer finished with eight kills and Wendy Krell added seven. Holdorff, Brewer and Krell each had two aces. Adrianne Meengs handed out 23 assists and had six kills, eight digs and three block assists.

Texas State came out in the first set and took a 3-0 lead before Lamar turned a 13-5 run into a 13-8 lead. The closest the Bobcats could get after that was four, at 17-13, but another LU stretch pushed the margin to 24-15 before closing out the set at 25-18.

The Lady Cards never trailed in the second set, using a run of 7-1 at the start and a 7-4 run to build a 14-6 advantage. The Bobcats came back and cut the score to one on five occasions, with the last coming at 21-20. But Lamar got two kills from Krell, one from Brewer to force set point where Meengs and Krell blocked Jessica Weynand's attack to claim the set 25-20.

It showed a lot of the character and intensity that we can bring in tough matches and that's really important for our young team right now.

Weynand led Texas State (8-11, 2-2 SLC) with eight kills, while Caleigh McCorquodale had 10 assists and nine digs. Shelbi Irvin had 12 assists. The Bobcats outhit the Lady Cardinals .165-.151.

The win marked the first time since 2001 and just the eighth time in 60 all-time meetings that Lamar has swept Texas State.

Lamar will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 8 when it travels to San Antonio to face UTSA. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
