Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lamar Smacks Sugar Bears, 3-0

Oct. 18, 2009

Lisa Hance scored a goal and assisted on another as Lamar earned its second-consecutive shutout with a 3-0 win over Central Arkansas in the 2009 home finale at the Lamar Soccer Complex Sunday.

Lamar (3-11-1, 2-4-0 Southland) earned its third shutout in program history and won consecutive games for the first time in three seasons of sponsoring women's soccer. The consecutive shutouts were also a first.

"It was a very good weekend in that we got the two wins and we got two shutouts," Lamar coach Dewi Hardman said. "We got what we needed and that was two wins to get back into the conference race."

Lamar is now tied for sixth with McNeese State as both teams have two wins and six points. Sam Houston State is in fifth with nine points but owns the head-to-head tiebreaker with both the Lady Cardinals and Cowgirls.

The Lady Cardinals came out as the aggressor in the first half and put a lot of pressure on the Sugar Bears. Hance broke through the defense with a rocket shot on the right side from about 15 yards that Kirby Huffstickler was unable to get a hand on as Lamar took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute.

Nearly seven minutes later, Hance's corner kick found sophomore Rachelle Barry a few feet off the end line who then headed it past Huffstickler in heavy traffic at the 42:22 mark for her first score this season and second of her career.

Lamar put the game away with a second-half goal from freshman Lorna Maudslay in the 65th minute. Freshman Lisa Topping fed a ball down the left flank that junior Kari Davila collected and dribbled a few more feet into the UCA end before she sent a cross that Maudslay scored on a one-timer. It was her second goal of the year.

Jennifer Gibbs earned her third career shutout by making just one save in 90 minutes. She now has all three shutouts in LU history on her resume.

UCA (6-8-1, 0-5 SLC) finished with eight shots, including six in the second half.

Lamar closed out its home schedule with a 3-3-1 record and averaged a single-season record 321 in those contests. In six games at the Lamar Soccer Complex, the facility hosted more than 2,000 fans with an average of 344 per outing - nearly 70 percent of capacity.

Lamar will now play its final three regular-season games in the state of Louisiana. That trip begins next Sunday, Oct. 25 at McNeese. Kickoff at Cowgirl Field is set for 2 p.m. The Lady Cards will conclude the trip the following weekend at Nicholls on Oct. 30 and at SLC co-leader Southeastern La. on Nov. 1.
