Box Score

HAMMOND, La. -- Behind a consistent offensive attack, the Lamar volleyball team defeated Southeastern Louisiana 3-1 at the University Center Saturday afternoon.

Lamar (11-8, 6-2 Southland) hit .221 for the match and held a 52-44 edge in digs. SLU (6-12, 2-5 SLC) hit just .115.

Lauren Holdroff finished with a match-high 10 kills to lead the Lady Cards, while Kaci Brewer and Wendy Krell added seven kills apiece.

Alex Morford and Adrianne Meengs split time at setter for LU and finished with 19 and 18 assists, respectively. Brewer led the team with 12 digs and Jayme Bazile had a solo block and three block assists.

While the LU regulars played well, Morford, Jamie Hope and Angel Colyar all made solid contributions in expanded roles. Hope added six winners and a block assist, with Colyar serving one ace and collecting eight digs.

"Jaime and Angel came off the bench and did a good job," head coach Justin Gibert. "Our serving and passing wasn't great but we maintained a pretty high hitting percentage for the most part and that did the job."

The first set was very competitive featuring four ties and one lead change. Southeastern's Jessica Srajer and Holdroff led their respective teams with four kills apiece in the set. After a Holdroff error cut the Lamar lead to 23-22, Cynthia McCollum answered with one of her four kills and a Lady Lion hitting error clinched the opening set for LU 25-22.

Southeastern led by as many as seven in the second set on its way to taking the set, 25-21.

Lamar came out the break much better, hitting .400 in the third set on the way to a 25-16 win. With SLU leading 11-10, Lamar rattled off eight-consecutive points to take an 18-11 lead en route to a 25-19 win.

The Lady Cardinals scored the first five points of the final set and never relinquished their lead, closing out the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.

SLU's Allison Jones had a team-high nine kills to the lead the home team. Lauren Mayer and Alexis Braghini added eight kills each for the Lady Lions.

Lamar will now return home and open a four-match homestand against arch-rival McNeese State on Friday night at McDonald Gym. The match will be the annual "Pack the Mac" Night and the first event of the 2009-10 Verizon Wireless Battle for the Border challenge series between the two athletic departments.

"It will be exciting to play at home and we always get great crowds in McDonald Gym," Gibert added. "We play pretty tough at home and right now we are in a solid third spot (in the conference standings) and looking to put some pressure on top two teams."
