Lamar Suffers 5-0 Loss To Louisiana-Monroe

Aug. 29, 2008

LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Lamar women's soccer team allowed three goals in the first 10 minutes and fell to Louisiana-Monroe 5-0 in the McNeese State Soccer Tournament at the Lake Charles Soccer Complex Friday night.

Lamar (0-2) managed 11 shots in the contest but were held scoreless for the second-straight time this season. Senior Aline Pugliesi had a team-high five for the Cardinals.

ULM (1-0) got on the board at the 4:11 mark when Tiffany Bombard scored the first of her two goals on the night. She added the second 3:17 later before Kendall Dawkins made it a 3-0 ULM advantage just 9:50 into the half.

"I am frustrated we didn't learn some of our lessons from last week," LU head coach Dewi Hardman said. "We gave up three quick ones and then played well from there, but it was a tough game with everything going on around us back on campus."

The Cardinals played very competitively over the remainder of the game as the Warhawks held just a 15-11 lead in shots during the final 80 minutes.

Junior goalie Jessica Winters made eight saves in goal and drew praise from Hardman for the second-consecutive game.

"Jessica gave us some good minutes in goal and showed us a lot of heart and fight.

"Aline had a couple of good chances including a ball from 15 yards out that just sailed over the crossbar. We played ten underclassmen again who played very hard, but we are young and made a few mistakes but still fighting hard. With everything that has been going on today it took its toll on us."

Kelly Browne and Megan Payne netted the final two scores for ULM with 9:18 and 4:56 remaining in the game.

Sunday's game with Grambling State has been postponed due to the circumstances surrounding Hurricane Gustav. Lamar is scheduled to play host to South Alabama next Friday at 7 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium in its home opener.

In the meantime, the women's soccer program will spend time in Fort Worth and on the campus of TCU during the period when Lamar's campus is closed in anticipation of the arrival of Gustav to southeast Texas.
