Lady Cardinals Outlast UT Arlington for 3-2 Win

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University volleyball team got all they could handle from the UT-Arlington Mavericks on Saturday afternoon before pulling out a 3-2 win at McDonald Gym.

The win boosts Lamar's record to 13-9 overall and 11-2 in Southland Conference play, while Arlington drops to 6-22 overall and 2-12 in conference play.

With the match tied at two sets apiece, the Lady Cardinals appeared as if they would drop their first ever decision to an SLC foe at McDonald Gym as UTA rallied to a quick three point lead. The Mavs held onto their three point advantage at 12-9, before the Lady Cardinals turned up the heat.

After an attack error by Arlington's Amanda Aguilera gave LU the serve, trailing 12-10, Ashley Todd used a five point run at the service line to close out the match. After a kill by Lauren Holdorff, the Lady Cards tied the match on a block by Holdorff and Meagan Adams. They took the lead on another block by Holdorff and Adams, and then got to match point on a kill by Holdorff. Lamar closed out the match with a third block by Adams and Holdorff. All three blocks came against Aguilera who gave LU fits all afternoon.

Lamar opened the match with a pair of convincing wins, taking out the Mavericks 25-21 and 25-15, but UT-Arlington refused to go away without a fight. Te Mavericks answered with a 25-23 win in the third set and tied the match at two sets apiece with a 27-25 win in the fourth.

For the match the Lady Cardinals were led by Genevieve Gladle, who posted a double-double with 21 kills and 23 digs while hitting .370 in 46 attempts. In the two matches against Arlington this year, Gladle averaged 21 kills and 18 digs with a .355 hitting percentage.

Kaci Brewer also added a double-double for Lamar, knocking down 13 kills and collecting 11 digs, while Shalayne Blythe had 12 kills. Todd led Lamar with 45 assists and Adrianne Meengs added 14 assists while the defense was led by Andrea Hamilton who picked up a match-high 25 digs.

The Lady Cardinals will be back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Huntsville, Texas for their final road contest of the season against Sam Houston State at 7 p.m.
