LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lamar University women's basketball gave the Texas Tech a scare at the United Spirit Arena on Friday night, but the Lady Raiders used a late rally to hand Lamar a 59-50 loss.
Trailing by 12 points with 12:35 to play in the game, the Lady Cardinals used an 11-2 run to close to within three points with 8:01 to play in the game. Emily Spickler started the run with a three pointer and Nikki Williams added a pair of layups while Brittney Williams knocked down a baseline jumper and Darika Hill sank a layup to cut the gap to 43-40.
The three point deficit was as close as Lamar would get though, as Tech rattled off six straight points to open it back up to a nine point game. The Lady Cardinals were able to contain Tech over the final eight minutes, but could not get any closer than seven points. Texas Tech finished out the game with a free throw with seven second remaining for the 59-50 win.
In the first half the Lady Cards gave Texas Tech all they could handle as they shot 43.5 percent from the field while Tech shot 40 percent. Nikki Williams led the way for LU with nine points of four of six shooting while Brittney Williams and Darika Hill added seven points and six points respectively.
Lamar's three point shooting in the opening half kept them in the ballgame, as they knocked down four of their seven shots from beyond the arc. The rebounding battle in the first half was also close, as Tech edged out Lamar 17 to 16.
Nikki Williams led all scorers in the game with 18 points, adding seven rebounds, four steals and two assists to her line for the night. Spickler and Brittney Williams each tallied 11 points for Lamar and Hill finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Raiders were led by freshman Jordan Barncastle's 14 points and 13 rebounds while Dominic Seals added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
As a team the Lady Cardinals outshot Tech 36.8 percent to 35 percent, while the Lady Raiders won the rebounding battle 42 to 38. Texas tech also had the advantage at the free throw line, sinking 11 of 17 freebies wile Lamar was one for two.
The Lady Cardinals will be back in action on Wednesday night when they take on Texas Southern at 7:00 at the Montagne Center.
