NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Behind a strong offensive performance by their outside hitters, the Lamar University volleyball team picked up a 3-2 road win over the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks at Johnson Coliseum Saturday night.
The win improves Lamar's record to 10-8 overall and 8-1 in Southland Conference play, while SFA falls to 16-5 overall and 7-2 in SLC play with the loss.
Trailing two sets to one, the Lady Cardinals refused to let SFA walk away with the match. Lamar rallied to grab a 25-21 in the fourth set, behind a .433 hitting performance. Kaci Brewer led the way for LU with six kills and a .556 hitting percentage while Lauren Holdorff added four kills with an .800 hitting percentage. Stephen F. Austin could not match the Lady Cardinals offense as they hit .178
With the match tied at two sets apiece Lamar closed the door on their second straight win in Nacogdoches with a 15-10 win to close out the match. The Lamar offense was again too much for the Ladyjacks to handle as they hit .345 while SFA managed to hit just .185. Meagan Adams led the way in the final frame, knocking down six kills with a .545 hitting percentage.
The Lady Cardinals opened the match with a masterful performance in set one, rolling to a 25-15 win, but SFA answered with a pair of 25-15 wins in sets two and three to take a 2-1 lead.
"This is a good win for us," head coach Justin Gibert said. "We came out of the gate real fast and put up a solid win in the first set, but we didn't play real well in the next two sets. We regrouped before the third set and I thought we responded really well and took control of the match. Once we got to the fifth set we were on a roll and we took the match."
The Lady Cardinals were led by Adams' 16 kills with a .516 hitting percentage, while Brewer registered a double-double with 16 kills and 13 digs while hitting .375. Shalayne Blythe registered 11 kills with a .500 hitting percentage and Holdorff finished with 11 kills and a match-high five blocks. Todd got the LU offense going with a 56 assist performance. Lamar's defense was led by Andrea Hamilton who picked up a season-high 28 digs.
"Meagan (Adams) came up huge for us tonight," Gibert said. "Meagan and Kaci (Brewer) were dominant on the outside and their play led to a great offensive night for us. Our middles, Lauren (Holdorff) and Shalayne (Blythe) were also solid and Ashley Todd did a phenomenal job getting us going with her setting."
The Lady Cardinals will be back in action again on Friday night as they remain on the road for a 7 p.m. contest against the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders at 7 p.m.
