BEAUMONT - The Lamar University volleyball team capped off a perfect weekend with a 3-0 win over the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders at McDonald Gym Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Cardinals used another dominant offensive performance combined with a second straight overpowering effort at the net defensively to improve to 6-8 overall and 4-1 in SLC play. The Islanders fall to 3-12 overall and 1-4 with the loss.
Lamar opened the match with a 25-18 win, led by play of setter Ashley Todd who passed out 16 assists. The offense was spread among the whole team as Lauren Holdorff, Genevieve Gladle and Shalayne Blythe each registered four kills while Meagan Adams and Kaci Brewer each had two.
In the second set Lamar was again dominant on offense with 17 kills, but the defense provided five blocks to stifle the Corpus Christi attack. Holdorff led the way with five kills and three blocks, while Adams added five kills. Todd was impressive again, passing out 16 assists on the 17 kills.
In set three A&M Corpus Christi jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but they could not hold on for long as LU used a 19-7 run to open up a 20-10 lead. The Lady Cardinals finished off the match with a 25-16 win, powered by Blythe who had five kills in the final set.
"Lauren Holdorff had another outstanding match and Ashley Todd was phenomenal today," head coach Justin Gibert said. "Those two players really carried us this weekend with their strong play. As a whole all of our middles and our outsides were great this weekend, but the Lauren and Ashley really set the tempo for us."
Blythe led the way for LU with 12 kills, a .632 hitting percentage and six blocks, while Holdorff finished with 11 kills and a .409 hitting percentage. Todd paced the offense with 44 assists while the defensive effort was led by Brewer and Andrea Hamilton who had 16 and 14 digs respectively.
As a team the Lady Cardinals posted a .349 hitting percentage, while holding the Islanders to just .147. The Lamar defense was also stingy, posting 11 blocks while Corpus Christi managed just three blocks.
For the weekend, the Lady Cardinals had outstanding numbers, with Holdorff leading the way with 22 kills and a .556 hitting percentage while posting six blocks. Blythe's weekend was equally impressive as she posted 16 kills with a .483 hitting percentage and had 10 blocks. Todd led the offense by passing out 76 assists in the two matches, averaging 12.67 assists per set.
The Lady Cardinals will be back in action on Wednesday night when they take on SLC East division foe Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La. at 7 p.m.
