BEAUMONT - Behind a dominant offensive effort by middle blocker Lauren Holdorff and a strong team defensive effort at the net, the Lamar University volleyball steamrolled previously unbeaten UT San Antonio 3-0 in front of a record 617 fans at McDonald Gym Friday night.
The win improves the Lady Cardinals overall record to 5-8 and 3-1 in Southland Conference play. The loss snaps a 10-match winning streak for UTSA and drops them to 11-7 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
The Lady Cardinals jumped on top of the Roadrunners early in the match with a pair of wins in sets one and two. The first set was tight for the majority of the time before LU used a 7-3 run to close out UTSA for a 25-20 win. Holdorff led the way for Lamar with five kills and a .714 hitting percentage while Ashley Todd passed out 11 assists.
The second set proved to be a little easier for Lamar as they pulled away from a 12-12 tie for a 25-19 win. The 13-7 run to close out the match was keyed by the Lamar defense which posted five blocks. Shalayne Blythe led LU with three blocks while Holdorff and Kaci Brewer each posted four kills to pace the offense.
The Roadrunners put up more of a fight in set three, jumping out to an early five point lead, but Lamar would not allow them to get any further. Trailing 18-13, Lamar rallied with a 12-4 run to close out the match with a 25-22 win. The LU rally was keyed by Courtney Trevino who came off the bench and picked up three kills and a service ace in the final frame.
For the match the Lady Cardinals were led by Holdorff's 11 kills and a career-best .786 hitting percentage, while Todd passed out a match-high 32 assists. The defense was led by Andrea Hamilton who picked up 12 digs.
As a team Lamar posted nine blocks, led by Blythe's four rejections while Holdorff and Meagan Adams each added three blocks.
The Lady Cards will be back in action on Saturday afternoon a 3:00 when they take on the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders at McDonald Gym.
