FORT WORTH, Texas - A dominant offensive performance led the Lamar University volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over the Georgia Southern Eagles in the opening match of the 2007 Molten/LaQuinta Inn Invitational hosted by Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Lady Cards and Georgia Southern traded points until midway through game one before a Destiny Mason kill sparked a six point run which enabled LU to take control. Strong serving by Lauren Holdorff, who had five points on serve, keyed the rally which led to a 30-21 win for the Lady Cards. Lamar had 23 kills and hit .435 in the opening game.
Games two and three saw LU continue to control the match, as GSU could never gain momentum against the Lady Cardinal attack. Lamar used a .333 hitting percentage to take game two 30-22, and finished the match off by hitting .366 in a 30-17 win in game three.
For the match the Lady Cardinals hit .381 as a team, while holding Georgia Southern to just .171. Four players for Lamar all posted hitting percentages of .308 or higher in the match. The LU defense was also solid, posting nine blocks and 65 digs while GSU managed just two blocks and 46 digs.
Individually the Lady Cardinals were led by Kaci Brewer's double-double, as the sophomore outside hitter had 17 kills and 17 digs with a .441 hitting percentage. Senior middle blocker Molli Abel also shined offensively, knocking down 15 kills with a .650 hitting percentage and posting five blocks. Freshman outside hitter Mason also got in on the action offensively, knocking down 10 kills with a .308 hitting percentage.
The Lady Cardinals set up by sophomore setter Adrianne Meengs who passed out 49 assists, while junior libero Andrea Hamilton notched 16 digs to help anchor the defense.
Georgia Southern was led by Bianca Julio's nine kills while setter Mae Chabra passed out 29 assists. The Eagle defense was led by Flavia Pereira's 11 digs, while Julio added 10 digs.
The Lady Cardinals will return to action tonight at 7 p.m. when they take on tournament host TCU. Saturday's action gets under way at 9:30 a.m. when LU takes on New Orleans, and concludes with a 2 p.m. match against Denver.
