NATCHITOCHES, La. - After a hiccup in game one, the Lamar University volleyball team rallied for a 3-1 win over Northwestern State at Prather Coliseum Saturday afternoon in Natchitoches, La.
The lady Cardinals improve to 12-7 on the year and 4-0 on Southland Conference play, with all four wins coming on the road. The win is the eighth straight for Lamar, the longest wining streak since the 2001 team won nine straight. It is also the first 4-0 start to conference play since the 2001 team started 8-0 during their nine game streak.
Northwestern State falls to 4-9 on the season and 0-4 in SLC play with the loss.
In game one the Lady Cardinals came out sluggish and fell behind NSU 15-8 before rallying to take a lead. Lamar however was unable to hold off the pesky Lady Demons down the stretch, as Northwestern squeezed out a 33-31 win.
In game two the Lady Cards rebounded from the let down in the opener, and cruised to a 30-23 win. Lamar's offense got on track with a .216 hitting percentage behind five kills by Molli Abel, while NSU hit -.057.
Game three was close early, but Lamar opened up a big lead and cruised to a 30-24 win behind another five kills by Abel. The LU offense continued its solid play, improving to a .324 hitting percentage in the third stanza, while Northwestern managed just a .163 hitting percentage.
Game four played out the same way games two and three did, with Lamar pulling away midway through the game. The Lady Cardinals again out hit the Lady Demons .289 to .116.
For the match the Lady Cardinals were led by Molli Abel's 17 kills with a .571 hitting percentage, while Meagan Adams knocked down 13 kills with a .550 hitting percentage. Setter Adrianne Meengs passed out 46 assists for LU and Andrea Hamilton led the defense with 17 digs.
Northwestern State was led by Talita Santos' 16 kills, while Markie Robichau and Yelena Enwere added 15 kills apiece. Luna Henriques passed out 50 assists for the Lady Demons and Meagan Manning led their defense with 26 digs.
The Lady Cardinals will be back in action on Tuesday night, when they return home to host the Lady Broncs of UT-Pan American at 7:00 at McDonald Gym.
