THIBODAUX, La. - The Lamar University volleyball team started Southland Conference play in fine fashion Friday night, blowing past the Nicholls State Lady Colonels 3-0 at Stopher Gym in Thibodaux, La.
The Lady Cardinals improve to 9-7 on the year and 1-0 in SLC play with the win, while Nicholls falls to 6-11 and 0-1. The win is also the fifth straight for Lamar, who has won six of their last eight matches.
Lamar wasted little time making their mark in the match, as they took the first two games in resounding fashion with scores of 30-15 and 30-13. Game three was slightly closer, but LU pulled away from a 12-12 tie to win 30-21.
Strong serving by the Lady Cardinals produced 10 service aces and kept the Lady Colonels off balance all night. Andrea Hamilton led the service attack with five aces, while Lauren Rush and Adrianne Meengs each added a pair.
The Lamar offense was keyed by a double-double from Kaci Brewer, who knocked down 10 kills while collecting 12 digs. Courtney Mitchell had a solid night offensive producing nine kills with a .421 hitting percentage, while Destiny Mason knocked down eight kills. Meengs also had a strong performance, passing out 30 assists and hitting .875 with seven kills in eight attempts.
The Lady Cardinal defense was led by Hamilton, who scooped up 14 digs, while Brewer and Molli Abel each posted four blocks. Mitchell was also active at the net, each tallying three blocks.
As a team the Lady Cardinals hit .340 for the match while holding Nicholls to just .057. Lamar also posted eight blocks as a team while the Lady Colonels had only five. No player for NSU had more than five kills in the match.
The Lady Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they take on the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions in Hammond, La. At 2 p.m.
