Lamar Loses at Loyola-Marymount, 9-0

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Playing its fifth straight road game to open the 2007 season, Lamar University women's soccer lost 9-0 at Loyola-Marymount Friday on the opening day of the Four Points Sheraton Culver City Classic at Sullivan Field.

After taking Saturday off, Lamar will close out play at the Culver City Classic Sunday at 1 p.m. (CST) against Oregon State, who posted a 1-0 win over Michigan in Friday's first game. Sunday's other match up has host LMU facing Michigan at 3 p.m.

LMU (1-3-1) raced out to a 4-0 lead at intermission. Jamie Bell got the Lions on the board in the 28th minute with Stefani Baduria assisting on the goal.

Lamar's (0-5) defense held until the final five minute before halftime. Shannon Omahen scored at 40:51 on a shot that caromed in off the post. Lily Sorentino made it 3-0 with a goal at 43:12 with Lauren Shanklin getting credit for an assist. Sorentino had a breakaway and netted the ball past Lamar goalkeeper Kelsie Binetti.

The Lions really broke the Cardinals back when Shanklin scored at 44:54, must six seconds before the buzzer sounded to end the first half. Staci McGuire registered Lamar's only shot of the first half and it was on goal.

LMU picked up where it left off to start the second half. Katie Osborne found the back of the net at 46:09 to make the score 5-0. Osborne added a second goal three minutes later (49:38) with Julie Gallaudet assisting on the goal.

Shanklin added her second goal of the game in the 54th minute. Kristen Garcia got credit for an assist. Gabrielle Parisella scored at 67:35 to make the score 8-0. Bell added an assist to go with her goal earlier in the game. The Lions closed out the scoring on Jill Sweetnam's goal at 77:09. Katrina Chong and Lauren Robinson picked up assists.

Beth Squires had a shot on goal for the Lady Cardinals late in the second half. LMU out shot Lamar 36 to two, including 17-2 in shots on goal. The Lions committed six fouls to Lamar's five.
