BEAUMONT - In their first match of the PROS Home Healthcare Invitational, the Lamar University Lady Cardinals posted a 3-1 win over The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in McDonald Gym.
The Lady Cards charged out to big leads in games one and two and held off late charges by the Lady Mocs to post wins of 30-23 and 30-21 for a 2-0 lead. In game three the Lady Cardinals fell behind midway through the match but rallied to tie the game at 29 before UTC closed it out 30-28. In game four the two teams battled back and forth before LU finished it 30-26.
The win improves LU's record to 6-7 on the season, and 2-1 at McDonald Gym. The Lady Mocs fell to 2-6 on the year with the loss.
The Lady Cardinals were led by Molli Abel's 18 kills, while Kaci Brewer posted a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs. Adrianne Meengs passed out a match-high 42 assists while Andrea Hamilton led the way defensively with 24 digs. Also getting in on the defensive action was Destiny Mason and Lauren Rush who had 13 and 11 digs respectively.
The Lady Mocs were led by Leslee Ball's 13 kills and Bethany Herndon's 28 assists. Defensively UTC was led by Lara Newberry who picked up a match-high 31 digs.
The Lady Cardinals will be back in action at 12:30 on Saturday when they take on the Jackson State Tigers. Jackson State went 1-1 on Friday, beating Texas Southern 3-0 and falling to UC-Riverside 3-1.
