Lady Cards Stun Southeastern 59-58 to End Regular Season

March 4, 2007

HAMMOND, La. - For the second straight year, the Lamar University women's basketball team played their final regular season game at Southeastern Louisiana University, and for the second straight year the Lady Cards handed the Lady Lions a loss at the University Center.

Dionne Pounds provided the fireworks for the Lady Cardinals, knocking down a three pointer with six seconds to play, giving Lamar the 59-58 win over Southeastern. The win is just the second road victory of the season for LU, and improves their overall record to 13-16 and 8-8 in Southland Conference play.

Trailing by three at halftime, the Lady Cardinals came out of the break slow which led to SELA jumping out to a nine point lead at the 15:30 mark of the second half on a Tina Wilson three pointer. Wilson's three gave the Lady Lions a 38-29 lead, but it also sparked the Lady Cards.

Lamar responded to Southeasterns run, with an 11-0 outburst of their own, keyed by Pounds and LaToya Carson. The run started with a Pounds jumper, followed by two jumpers by Carson, a three pointer by Pounds and a three point basket by Alexis Timpone which game the Lady Cards a 40-38 lead with 12:41 to play.

The Lady Cardinals built their lead to as much as five points at 45-40 with 10 minutes to play, but Southeastern would not go down without a fight. The lead changed hands five times in the final eight minutes of the game, with the last swap coming with six seconds to play on Pounds triple.

For the game the Lady Cardinals were led by freshman Brittney Williams, who posted her 10th double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while her low post side kick Shaquita Coffey added 11 points and seven boards. Carson chipped in with nine points and Pounds added eight for LU.

Southeastern was led by Brenita Williams 18 points, while Brooke Necaise and Wilson each chipped in with 10 points.

As a team the Lady Cardinals out shot Southeastern 46.2 percent to 40 percent, while out rebounding them 41 to 38. The Lady Cards also won the battle at the free throw line, sinking 15 of 20 freebies, while the Lady Lions finished 12-20.

The Lady Cardinals will be in action again on Wednesday at noon, when they take on Stephen F. Austin in the first round of the 2007 O'Reilly Auto Parts Southland Conference Tournament at the Campbell Center in Houston.
