BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's basketball team won their second straight game Saturday night, taking out the Northwestern State Lady Demons 69-58 at the Montagne Center.
The win boots the Lady Cardinals record to 11-14 on the year and 6-6 in Southland Conference play, while Northwestern State falls to 10-14 and 4-8.
Leading by three points at halftime, the Lady Cardinals stretched their lead to as much as nine points in the first 10 minutes of the half, but Northwestern State refused to go away without at fight.
The Lady Demons closed to within two points with 8:54 to play on a jumper by Ashli Barnum, but the Lady Cardinals responded with an 11-3 run over the next four minutes to break the game open.
LaToya Carson led the way during the 11-3 run, scoring seven points, including a three pointer which stretched the Lady Cardinal lead to six points. Dionne Pounds capped the run with an acrobatic layup on the baseline, giving LU a 59-49 lead.
Lamar was able to prevent any comeback by the Lady Demons by sinking six of their seven free throw attempts over the final 1:40 of the game.
The Lady Demons opened the game by jumping on top of Lamar 9-2 in the first four minutes of play, but the Lady Cardinals quickly erased the early deficit, and in doing so took control of the games momentum.
Lamar tied the game on an Alexis Timpone three pointer with 14:25 to play in the first half, starting a back and forth battle over the next 10 minutes. The Lady Cardinals then grabbed control of the game for good on another Timpone three pointer, giving them a 23-21 lead with 5:44 to play.
For the game, the Lady Cardinals were led by Carson's 24 points and seven rebounds. Her scoring effort was aided by an impressive 10-12 performance at the free throw line. Brittney Williams added 16 points and eight boards for Lu and Timpone scored 15 points on 5-9 shooting from behind the three point arc.
Northwestern State was led by Chassidy Jones's16 points, while Tena Matthews and Barnum added 13 and 11 points respectively.
As a team the Lady Cardinals shot 47.8 percent (22-46) from the field, while holding the Lady Demons to just 32.9 (23-70) percent. Northwestern State did win the rebounding battle 39 to 38, but the Lady Cardinals 18-23 performance game them the edge over the Lady Demons 10-12 effort.
The Lady Cardinals will be in action again on Thursday night when they take on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in Corpus Christi at 7:00.
