HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Lamar University volleyball team rebounded from Tuesday night's loss at McNeese in fine fashion Friday night, sweeping Sam Houston State Bearkats 30--26, 30-17, 30-20 at Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville, Texas.
With the win the Lady Cards improve to 19-8 on the year and 10-1 in Southland Conference play. It is their 15th win in their last 16 matches. Sam Houston drops to 5-6 in conference play and 11-13 overall with the loss.
The Lady Cardinals started the match slow, falling five points behind the Bearkats at 13-8. Lamar found their stride midway through the game and crawled back to tie the game at 24, and used their momentum to finish off the Kats 30-26. Middle blocker Shalayne Blythe led the way for LU in the opening frame, pounding down seven kills with a .667 hitting percentage.
The Lady Cardinals continued their strong play to open the second game as Ashley Todd served seven straight points to give Lamar a 7-0 lead, and they never looked back. The Lady Cards opened up a lead as big as 15 points at 26-11 and cruised to a 30-17 win.
After the intermission LU again jumped on top of Sam Houston early and never trailed as they closed out the match with a 30-20 win. The two teams spent the beginning of the game trading points before Lamar used a 13-6 run to pull away. The final point of the match came on a service ace by Adrianne Meengs.
For the match the Lady Cards were led by Molli Abel's 15 kills with a .500 hitting percentage, while Meengs narrowly missed a triple double with 38 assists, 12 digs and seven kills. Blythe, who was an all-conference softball player at Sam Houston before transferring to Lamar, posted a career-high 10 kills with a career-best .562 hitting percentage.
The Lady Cardinals defense was led by Destiny Mason's 15 digs, while Kaci Brewer and Andrea Hamilton added 12 and 10 digs respectively.
The Bearkats were led by Cynthia Yarotsky's 18 kills and 19 digs, while Megan Kuehler picked up a match-high 20 digs. Setter Megan McNamara led the Kats with 22 assists.
The Lady Cardinals will be in action again on Saturday night in Nacogdoches, Texas when they take on conference leader Stephen F. Austin at 7:00.
