BEAUMONT - Behind solid offensive performances by Kaci Brewer and Molli Abel, the Lamar University volleyball team cruised past the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions 3-0 at McDonald Gym.
The win gives Lamar a 16-7 record on the year, and a 7-0 start to Southland Conference play, their best start since the 2001 team opened conference play 8-0. The Lady Cardinals also extend their winning streak to 12 matches, tying the 2002 teams 12 match streak. Southeastern falls to 8-10 on the year, and 0-7 in SLC play.
The Lady Cards and Southeastern battled back and forth in games one and two, but the Lamar offensive attack was too much for the Lady Lions to handle down the stretch in both of the opening games. Lamar pulled out a 30-25 win in game one and a 30-22 win in game two, giving them control of the match.
In game three the Lady Cardinals flipped a switch offensively, as LU coasted past the Lady Lions 30-18. Lamar hit .294 while holding SLU to a -.028 hitting percentage. Lauren Holdorff and Shalayne Blythe both came up big at the net in game three, posting three blocks apiece.
For the match, the Lady Cardinals were led by Brewer's 15 kills with a .367 hitting percentage, while Abel knocked down 10 kills with and a .529 hitting percentage. Ashley Todd had a solid match, passing out 37 assists, while Andrea Hamilton led the defensive effort with 20 digs.
Southeastern was led by Melissa Jones' 10 kills, while Maddie Beebe passed out 24 assists.
The Lady Cardinals will be in action again on Friday October 19, when they host SLC West foe Texas State at 7 p.m. at McDonald Gym.
