BEAUMONT - Despite a sluggish start which saw the Lamar University volleyball team go into the intermission down 2-0, a dominating performance coming out of the locker room propelled the Lady Cards to a 3-2 win over Northwestern State at the Montagne Center Saturday night.
Trailing 0-2, the Lady Cardinals came out in game three and jumped on top of Northwestern State early, and held on for a 30-23 win. Lamar continued their strong play in game four, jumping out to a 9-0 lead and cruised to a 30-16 win, forcing a fifth game.
In game five, the Lady Cardinals again opened up an early lead, but Northwestern State closed the gap to within one point at 9-8. After trading points with the Lady Demons until it was 12-11, the Lady Cards closed the match out by getting the final three points to win 15-11.
The first game of the match was a marathon which Northwestern State eventually won 42-40, and the Lady Demons dominated in game two, taking a 30-23 win into the break.
Buchi Okoh continued her strong play this week, posting a double-double with 25 kills, hitting .600, and posting 12 blocks to lead LU to victory. Molli Abel also had a third straight strong performance, knocking down 24 kills while hitting .352.
Adrianne Meengs and Ashley Todd shared the setting duties, with Meengs taking control in the middle of game two and posting 43 assists. Todd dished out 27 assists.
Defensively, the Lady Cards had three players in double digit digs, with Andrea Hamilton leading the way with 21. Meengs posted a double-double by grabbing 10 digs, and Alex Brink scooped 10 digs as well.
Northwestern State was led offensively by Juliana Abreu's 19 kills, while Whitney King and Yelena Enwere added 15 and 10 kills respectively.
Lamar improves to 6-10 overall and 2-0 in Southland Conference play with the win, while Northwestern State drops to 5-7 overall and 0-2 in SLC play with the loss.
Lamar will be in action again Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m., when they host the Rice Owls at the Montagne Center.
