BEAUMONT - The Lamar University volleyball team opened Southland Conference play with a 3-1 win over the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears, in front of 285 people at the Montagne Center Friday night during their home opener.
The win was the second straight for LU, who knocked off Louisiana Lafayette on Tuesday night, and improved the Lady Cards record to 5-10 on the year and 1-0 in SLC play. UCA dropped to 9-8 on the year, and 0-1 in conference play.
Lamar opened the match with a 30-25 win, but the Sugar Bears were able to steal the momentum from the Cards with a 30-21 victory going into the break.
After the intermission, the Lady Cardinals came out determined to shut down UCA, and were successful with a strong serving attack. Meagan Adams keyed the Lamar offense with tough serving, and helped LU to a 30-24 win in game three.
In game four the Lady Cardinals continued their hot play, pulling away from UCA early and cruising to a 30-22 win.
The Lady Cardinal offense was keyed by Buchi Okoh and Molli Abel, who tallied 21 and 20 kills while hitting .500 percent and .385 respectively. Ashley Todd keyed the offense with 52 assists in the match, while Alex Brink collected 16 digs.
Central Arkansas was led by three players with double digit kills, as Evaree Franklin knocked down 13 kills, while Amicha Williams and Camila Scapini each posted 11. Robyn Smith passed out 36 assists and Brianna LaBrot had 14 digs to lead the Sugar Bears.
The Lady Cards will be in action again on Saturday night showdown with Northwestern State at 7:30 p.m. in the Montagne Center.
