BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University volleyball opened the 2006 season Friday night, falling to the Tulane Green Wave in three games 30-25, 30-21 and 30-16 in their opening game of the Kathy Trosclair Memorial Tournament at the Reily Student Recreation Center in New Orleans, La.
The Lady Cards set got out to an early lead of three points in game one, but could not pull away from the Green Wave, who closed the gap midway through the game. Tulane took game one 30-25 behind the arm of Sara Radosevic's five kills while Ksenija Vlasovic and Lauren Boatright each had four. Molli Abel led LU in kills in game one, knocking down four.
One point into game two, the match was delayed for 20 minutes due to a leak in the Riley Center roof, which caused the match to move from court one to court three.
Once the match resumed, the Lady Cards again jumped out quickly, but another strong push by Tulane midway through the game gave them control. The Green Wave broke open the second game with another strong effort by Radosevic, running away with a 30-21 win.
The Green Wave jumped out to a commanding 14-3 lead to start game three, and easily cruised to a 30-16 win to close out the match.
Vlasovic led the way for Tulane with 11 kills, while Radosevic led knocked down 10.
Buchi Okoh led Lamar with 10 kills, while Ashley Todd passed out 20 assists.
Lamar will be in action again Saturday morning at 11 a.m. when they take on the University of New Orleans, and they will wrap up tournament play at 5 p.m. Saturday afternoon against Southland Conference foe McNeese State.
