Lady Cardinals fall at IUPUI 65-57

Dec. 13, 2006

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Lamar University women's basketball team dropped their second straight road game Wednesday night, falling to the IUPUI Jaguars 65-57 at the IUPUI Gymnasium.

Trailing by double digits for the majority of the second half, the Lady Cards made a late run to cut the Jaguar lead down to four, but could not get any closer as IUPUI was able to ice the game at the free throw line.

Lamar's last run came with 21 seconds to play as senior Dionne Pounds stone an arrant pass at mid court and quickly knocked down a three pointer to close the gap to 61-57. The Lady Cards then fouled IUPUI's Brykeshia Tate who sank both free throws to give the Jaguars a six point advantage. The Lady Cards were unable to connect on another basket in the closing seconds and IUPUI was able to finish the game with another pair of free throws by Tate.

Tate finished the game with 13 points for the Jags, but the bulk of the damage done on the offensive and defensive end for the IUPUI was done by sophomore Jernisha Cann who scored 18 points and grabbed 11 boards.

Lamar was led by Pounds and Carson who each chipped in with 16 points, while Quiana N'Joku added eight points for the Lady Cards.

In the first half the Lady Cardinals struggled to stop the Jaguars inside play as IUPUI scored 14 points in the paint en route to a 32-27 lead. Lamar shot 40.6 percent from the field and connected on four of eight three pointers while IUPUI shot 50 percent. Lamar also hindered their chances with 15 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.

Despite playing just six minutes in the first half Pounds led the way for Lamar with nine points, connecting on all three of her three point field goals. LaToya Carson added five points and Brittney Williams added four.

For the game the Lady Cardinals out shot IUPUI 46.5 percent to 35.5 percent, but the Jaguars 23 offensive rebounds helped them to a 42-31 victory on the glass. Lamar also turned the ball over 25 times to IUPUI's 15, while the Jags finished the game 17-26 from the free throw line to LU's 10-18.

The Lady Cardinals will be in action again on Monday night in Lorman, Miss. when they take on the Alcorn State Lady Braves at 7:00.
