SAN ANTONIO - After falling behind 2-0, the Lamar University volleyball team made a furious rally, but eventually dropped a five-game thriller to UT-San Antonio on Saturday evening at the Convocation Center (30-22, 30-18, 28-30, 20-30, 15-12).
The Lady Cardinals opened the match flat and UTSA cruised to a 2-0 lead at the intermission with 30-22 and 30-18 wins in the first two games. The Lady Cards came out strong after the break to pick up a hard-fought 30-28 victory in game three to keep the match alive.
Lamar parlayed the momentum of that win into a 30-20 triumph one frame later and the match went to a fifth and deciding game. Lamar grabbed the lead early on, but the Roadrunners tied the game at 10 and scored five of the final seven points to prevent the come back effort of LU.
Lamar dropped to 11-19 overall and 6-8 in Southland Conference play, while San Antonio beat the Lady Cardinals for the sixth straight time and improved to 17-12 overall and 9-5 in conference play.
The Lady Cards were led offensively by Kaci Brewer, Lauren Rush and Lauren Holdorff who each knocked down 13 kills. Adrianne Meengs passed out 48 assists in the loss while Andrea Hamilton collected a career-high 32 digs. Brewer and Meengs finished the night with double-doubles, posting 17 and 10 digs each, while Meengs narrowly missed a triple-double with nine kills.
The Lady Cardinals will be in action again next Friday, when they take on Nicholls State at 7:30 p.m. at the Montagne Center.
