Lamar Drops Nicholls State 3-1

BEAUMONT - Led by a host of underclassmen, the Lamar University volleyball team posted a 3-1 win over the Nicholls State Lady Colonels at the Montagne Center on Friday night.

The Lady Cards improved to 12-19 overall and 7-8 in Southland Conference play with the win, while Nicholls State dropped to 9-21 and 3-12.

The Lady Colonels made an early statement that they would not go down easy, rally from a two point deficit to take control of game one. The two teams jockeyed for control of the game and finally Nicholls grabbed the opener 35-33 to take a 1-0 lead.

Nicholls appeared ready to run away with the match early in game two, jumping out to a 9-5 lead, but the Lady Cards quickly rallied back and took control before the Lady Colonels could pull away. Lamar opened a five point lead at 18-13, and coasted to a 30-25 win to tie the match.

Nicholls again jumped out early in game three but LU closed the gap and began to pull away midway through the game. Tied at 15, sophomore Meagan Adams had a five point service run to open a lead for Lamar, and sophomore Ashley Todd closed the match on a six point run, helping the Lady Cards post a 30-18 win and stake control of the match.

Nicholls again showed fight in game four, jumping out to a 7-2 lead, but the Lady Cards once again rallied past the Lady Colonels to take control. Lamar pulled away from a 17-17 tie and closed out the match with a 30-25 win.

Freshman Lauren Holdorff led the way for Lamar's offense, knocking down 19 kills with a .361 hitting percentage, while freshman Kaci Brewer posted a double-double with 13 kills and a team-high 21 digs. Sophomore Lauren Rush also came up big for Lamar, knocking down 10 kills.

Todd came off the bench to quarterback the Lamar offense, passing out 45 assists, while freshman Adrianne Meengs posted 10 assists. Two other Lady Cardinals posted double-digit digs, as sophomore Andrea Hamilton collected 19, while Adams had 13.

The Lady Cardinals will be in action again Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they take on Southeastern Louisiana at the Montagne Center. The match will be the final match of the 2006 regular season, and will also be senior day. Senior Buchi Okoh will be recognized for the four years of excellence with the Lady Cardinals before the match.
