ARLINGTON, Texas - Despite a strong offense effort by senior Buchi Okoh, the Lamar University volleyball team was unable to knock off the University of Texas-Arlington Lady Mavericks Saturday night, falling 3-1 on the Stage in Arlington.
The Lady Cards opened the match with a 30-20 win, but UTA bounced back to take game two 30-27 to even the match at a game apiece.
Game three was another close battle that Arlington narrowly pulled out. Trailing 29-24, and facing game point, Lamar made a four-point run to close to within 29-28, but a Torie Dacus and Michelle Schwartz block of a Molli Abel attack closed out the game for the Mavs.
Arlington used the momentum from wins in games two and three to their advantage, as they closed out the match with a 30-25 win in game four.
The Lady Cardinals received a huge offensive effort from Okoh, who knocked down 24 kills while hitting .347. Abel also had a solid night, knocking down 18 kills while hitting .275, while Courtney Mitchell and Lauren Rush added 11 and 10 kills respectively. Ashley Todd led Lamar with 44 assists while Adrianne Meengs added 16. Defensively the Lady Cards had two players register 20-plus digs, with Alex Brink collecting 25 digs and Andrea Hamilton chipped in with 21. Todd picked up a double-double in the match as she scooped 10 digs.
The Lady Mavs were led by Dacus and Teena Sobczak who knocked down 17 and 14 kills respectively, while Danni Johnson and Emily Nedderman added 10 kills each.
The Lady Cardinals will be in action again next Friday, when they take on Sam Houston State at the Montagne Center at 7:30 p.m.
