SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Lamar University volleyball team dropped a five game thriller to the Texas State Bobcats Friday night in Strahan Coliseum, pushing the defending Southland Conference tournament champions to the brink in San Marcos. Three of the five games played were decided by two points, and two of the three went into extra scoring for their decision.
Holding a 2-1 lead after three games, the Lady Cardinals were narrowly edged in games four and five, as Texas State held on for the win. Game four saw the two teams go nose to nose, with the Bobcats snagging a 32-30 win, and in game five the Cardinals were again edged out by a score of 17-15.
The Lady Cardinals opened the match with a 30-26 win in game one, but Texas State responded with a 30-20 win to tie the match at one game apiece. Lamar rebounded in game three and pulled out a 30-28 win to take a 2-1 advantage.
Lamar was led by senior Buchi Okoh who knocked down 18 kills, while junior Molli Abel added 14. Sophomore Lauren Rush and junior Courtney Mitchell also added double digit kills for LU, knocking down 11 and 10 kills respectively. Freshman Adrianne Meengs passed out 42 assists for Lamar, while sophomore Ashley Todd added 10. Defensively Lamar received 22 digs from Andrea Hamilton, while Alex Brink chipped in with 12.
Texas State was paced by Lawrencia Brown's 19 kills while Kelly Fletcher added 16. Also coming up big for the Bobcats were Amy Weigle and Emily Jones who added 14 and 11 kills respectively.
The loss drops Lamar to 8-13 on the year, and 4-2 in SLC play, while Texas State improves to 8-12 overall and 4-2 in SLC play.
The Lady Cardinals will be in action again Saturday night a 7 p.m. when they take on UT-Arlington.
