ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico - The Lamar Lady Cardinals split their two matches at the Comcast Lobo Tournament, hosted by the University of New Mexico, falling 3-1 to host New Mexico, and picking up their first win of the 2005 season with a 3-1 win over Northern Arizona.
After dropping their first match of the day against New Mexico, the Lady Cardinals bounced back with a 3-1 win over the Lumberjacks.
Lamar took game one of the match 30-25 before NAU posted a 27-30 to tie the match at a game a piece. Trailing 26-21 in the third game, the Lady Cardinals rallied to take game three 30-28. Erica Brown served six straight points to swing the momentum, as Lamar took advantage of three NAU errors during the run.
In game four the two teams battled to a 27-27 tie, before Lamar pulled out the final three points. The match was capped off by a block by Courtney Mitchell and Kaera Baltrip, giving the Lady Cardinals a 30-27 win.
Lamar was led in the match by Buchi Okoh, who posted 17 kills and six blocks, while Molli Abel and Lauren Rush knocked down 15 and 12 kills respectively. Setter Ashley Todd had passed out 42 assists while Erica Brown collected 15 digs. Baltrip also had a solid match, collecting 12 digs, nine kills and a block.
In the first match of the day, the Lady Cardinals fell to the New Mexico Lobos 3-1. After dropping game one 19-30, the Lady Cardinals rebounded with a 30-24 win to even the score at one game a piece. New Mexico however pulled away in games three and four, 23-30 and 24-30.
Okoh again led the offensive effort for Lamar, posting 17 kills, while Abel and Rush had 14 and 12. Todd had a season-high 48 assists in the match, while Brown collected 23 digs.
The Lady Cardinals will be in action again on Friday, Sept. 9, when they travel to Oxford, Miss. For the Ole Miss Tournament. Lamar will take on Ole Miss, North Carolina State, Lipscomb and Texas in the tournament.
