BEAUMONT - - Led by a season high 22 points by junior LaToya Carson, the Lamar Lady Cardinal basketball team picked up their second win of the season, knocking off the William Carey Lady Saders 78-42 at the Montagne Center Monday night.
After getting out to a sluggish start which saw William Carey jump out to a 12-7 lead, the Lady Cardinals put the defensive clamps down and took control of the game. The offense in the first half was taken care of by Carson as LU held their opponent to a 14.3 shooting percentage in the opening period.
While the defense was shutting down the Lady Saders, Carson caught fire on the offensive end of the floor. She knocked down eight of her 10 shots and both of her free throw attempts en route to 18 points in the opening period. Lamar took a 32-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half the rest of the Lady Cards began to find their offensive game, as Dionne Pounds knocked down four of her seven attempts from the field to finish with 13 points, while Audrea Samuel posted 10 points, nine rebounds and four blocks for the game.
Carson knocked down just two shots in the second half, finishing the game 10-18 from the field. Her 10 made shots equaled the total number of made baskets by William Carey in the game, as the Lady Saders finished 10-57 from the field, a shooting percentage of 17.5 percent.
In addition to holding William Carey to 17.5 percent from the field, the Lady Cardinals out rebounded their opponent 54-35.
The Lady Cardinals (2-4) will be in action again Wednesday night when they travel to Prairie View to take on the Panthers at 6 p.m. and on Saturday afternoon they will take on Huston Tillotson at 3 p.m. at the Montagne Center.
