SAN ANTONIO, Texas - After grabbing a 2-1 lead over the University of Texas-San Antonio, the Lamar Lady Cardinals were not able to hold off the Roadrunners, falling in five games.
San Antonio picked up a 30-28 win in game one, holding off a late charge by Lamar who trailed 28-23. The Lady Cardinals closed to within two points at 29-27, but were not able to pull out the win.
Lamar didn't let the loss in game one get them down though; rallying in game two for a 30-27 win. In game three the Lady Cardinals used the momentum from game two to post a 30-22 win and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
With a game lead, Lamar was not able to hold off the Roadrunners in game four, falling 30-26, forcing a deciding game five. In the fifth game, UTSA pulled away from a 5-5 tie for a 15-9 win.
Nikki Perry led the way for the Lady Cardinals with a season-high 19 kills and a .366 hitting percentage, while Buchi Okoh knocked down 18 kills and Lauren Rush finished with 12 kills and setter Ashley Todd passed out 49 assists.
Defensively, the Lady Cardinals posted a season-high 91 digs, led by Alyssa Parks who finished with a match-high 30 digs. Erica Brown collected 15 digs, while Todd and Andrea Hamilton each collected 10.
The loss drops the Lady Cardinals to 5-18 on the year, and 3-8 in Southland Conference play. Lamar will be in action again next Friday when they travel to Thibodaux, La. to take on the Nicholls State University a 7 p.m.
