McDonald Gym

McDonald Gymnasium, opened in 1958, quickly became a campus landmark and hosted basketball, volleyball, high school sports, commencements, concerts and major events. Entertainment icons like Isaac Hayes and Chuck Mangione performed there, and Lamar athletic offices were housed inside.

The gym honors Dr. F.L. McDonald, Lamar’s fourth and longest-serving president (1952–67). Known as “Dr. Mac,” he guided Lamar through rapid growth, expanding academics and facilities. A devoted sports fan, he rarely missed a game and was celebrated annually by the marching band on his birthday.

In 2006, McDonald Gym was renovated as part of the $6.2 million Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center. Today, it serves as Lamar volleyball’s home court, featuring a maple wood floor and seating for 500.

The facility includes:

Coaches’ offices for cross country, tennis, track & field and volleyball.
Locker rooms for teams, officials and visitors.
Athletic training suite with offices, treatment areas and hydrotherapy.
Student-athlete lounge with seating, massage chair, TV and vending.
Study center with private rooms, computer lab and academic offices.
