WESTLAKE, La. - Former Lamar University golfer Dawie Van Der Walt continues to work toward playing on the PGA Tour, winning the Southwest Louisiana Lions Club Open on the Adams Golf Pro Tour Series last weekend.
Van Der Walt, who finished his impressive Lamar career in 2007, has now won twice at this event. The native South African will play the next seven events on the Nationwide Tour as he tries to earn his way onto the PGA Tour.
Van Der Walt started the final round trailing by three strokes, but used a bogey-free 66 to force a playoff with Travis Woolf at the par-72 National Golf Club of Louisiana. On the fourth playoff hole Van Der Walt managed to make birdie to close out the victory.
Van Der Walt was the 2007 Southland Conference champion and Player of the Year and a three-time Ping All-American. He finished fourth individually at the 2006 NCAA Championships, and helped the Cardinals tie for third at the 2007 NCAA Championships.
