Yamelis Ortiz won three consecutive Sun Belt Conference titles in the 400 meters from 1996 through 1998, qualifying for the NAA Championships all three years.
Ortiz was also a member of the Lamar University 1,600-meter relay team that won the 1998 Sun Belt Conference crown. After graduating from LU, Ortiz represented Puerto Rico in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, as a member of the 1,600-meter relay squad.
Ortiz was named to the Sun Belt Conference’s 30th Anniversary team in March 2014.
