Spergon Wynn came to Lamar University as a non-scholarship player and wound up being recognized as one of the Cardinals’ greatest offensive linemen.
He walked on the practice field in 1964 and asked for a tryout. When he closed his career in 1967, Wynn had carted off many honors, but the most-prized decoration was being named to the All-American Team in 1967.
Wynn, who played bigger than the 195 pounds he carried on his 6-foot, 3-inch frame, was also All-Southland Conference in 1966 and 1967. Considered the best pulling offensive guard in Lamar’s history, Wynn was named to the SLC’s first all-decade team in 1973. He was named the Cardinals’ Best Offensive Lineman in 1967. Wynn, who was a starter for four years, played on three consecutive Southland Conference championship teams from 1964 through 1966.
