Mariaryeni Gutierrez arrived in Beaumont in 2006 and became one of the most decorated players in conference history. A seven-time All-Southland Conference player, Gutierrez capped her career by becoming just the second player in school history to be named SLC Player of the Year. Gutierrez achieved perfection as a senior posting a 21-0 record in singles play, with all but one match coming at the No. 1 position. A three-time first team All-SLC selection, Gutierrez guided the Cardinals to their first SLC tournament title in 2008 and a trip to the NCAA Championships. Gutierrez's success on the court came as a surprise to no one after recording SLC Freshman of the Year honors following her rookie season.
