Heralded as the most exciting athlete in Lamar University history, Earl “The Pearl” Dow highlighted the school’s most exciting sports season in 1968-69.
A skinny-legged New Yorker, Dow put on some remarkable exhibitions with his shooting and passing in leading the Cardinals to a record 20-4 campaign. Dow set Lamar records of 560 points and a 23.3 points per game scoring average that year, earning third-team All-America honors.
He had some great games, such as 31 points against Memphis State, 28 points against Southwest Conference champion Texas A&M, 23 points in the thrilling overtime win over Houston, 28 and 30 points against Pan American and 25 points against unbeaten Tulsa.
Dow, who was All-Southland Conference in 1968 and 1969, scored 964 points in his two seasons at Lamar. He was selected to the College East-West All-Star Game, scoring 11 points for the victorious West team.
