A four-time Southland Conference champion in the 400-meter dash, Douglas Hinds was a mainstay of Lamar University’s dominating teams from 1978 until 1982, which won the Southland Conference title each of those years. He set a Southland Conference record of 46.02 in the 400 meters at the 1982 NCAA Championships.

Hinds held the top five 400-meter times in LU history. He led the Cardinals to an eighth-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay at the 1979 NCAA Outdoor Championships and a 10th-place finish in 1982. Hinds was a member of the sprint medley and distance medley relay teams that set LU records.

Hinds earned all-conference honors in outdoor track 12 times, and was indoor all-conference in 1980 in the 60-yard dash and 4x800 relay. Hinds, who was the Canadian Indoor 400-meter national champion, competed in the 1980 and 1984 Summer Olympics for Canada, as well as the 1979 and 1983 Pan American Games.
