BEAUMONT – Senior right-hander
Enrique Oquendo joined the ranks of 2016 Lamar University baseball players to sign with a Major League Baseball organization when he signed a free agent deal with the Los Angeles Angels shortly after the draft, announced the program Tuesday.
Oquendo, native of Euless, joined
Will Hibbs and
Stijn van der Meer – who were selected in the amateur draft Saturday. He has not been assigned to a team, but reports later this week.
The flame thrower has been an essential part of LU's bullpen for the past two seasons. He has a career 2.93 earned run average and picked up three saves. In 46 career innings, Oquendo has only allowed 15 earned runs.
This season alone, the hurler has fired 39 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings with a 2.30 earned run average. He logged the third-most bullpen innings on the team, and added one start – against Incarnate Word.
He earned his first save of the year in the season opener on 1.2 innings pitched, with just one walk allowed and four strikeouts. His second save came in his second outing, against No. 5 LSU. He worked one perfect inning and ended the contest on a strikeout. His third save of the campaign was against Texas, fired in one inning with two strikeouts.
